TURP

 

The actual gold standard consists of transurethral resection of the prostate which is performed by the insertion of a resectoscope.

Indications:

1. Frequency and urgent need to urinate
2. Difficulty to start urination
3. Slow and prolonged urination
4. Frequent needs to urinate at night (nocturia)
5. Intermittent urination
6. Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
7. Inability of urinate

This condition can have consequences for which using TURP could be preventative:

1. Recurring urinary infections
2. Bladder or kidney damage
3. Urinary incontinence
4. Bladder stones
5. Blood in urine (haematuria)

Hospitalisation is about 2-3 days. The operation (TURP) can cause retrograde ejaculation when semen redirected to the urinary bladder by ejaculation.

Frequent postoperative side effects are:

1. Painful urination
2. Frequent and urgent need to urinate
3. Blood clots in urine. Urinary catheter is also necessary to eliminate blood traces in urine.

These symptoms are normal after such procedure and should not last more than four weeks. The improvement is gradual.
