Rezum

Water therapy of the prostate

Rezum is a (water) steam vapour treatment of the prostate, which is performed as a day case in hospital under anaesthesia. During the 5-10 minutes long operation a hand-held device passes through the urethra to reach the prostatic lobes that are vaporised via a needle which delivers thermal energy. Patients are discharged after a few hours with a catheter that will be removed in 5-7 days’ time. Rezum treatment is able to reduce prostatic volume approximately by 40%. According to European guidelines of urology it allows the preservation of erectile and ejaculatory functions more than any other procedure. Once catheter is removed the initial results will appear after 30 days with the peak of maximum benefit after 60-90 days.

Rezum treatment is indicated in patients with characteristic symptoms.

Side effects

Rezum treatment can cause the following side effects which can last from a few days to a month

  1. difficulty to urinate
  2. Burning sensation while urinating
  3. Frequent urination (pollakiuria)
  4. Nocturia (urination at night)

For this reason, correct indication is fundamental. The improvement is not permanent, it usually lasts for 5 years. This day surgery procedure is recommended for those who want to avoid a more extensive operation or for younger patients to safeguard their ejaculation.
