Benign prostatic hypertrophy

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the enlargement of the prostate’s volume, usually after the age of 50. It has an unknown aetiology but it is influenced by androgens. It can cause urinary obstruction.

The diagnosis is based upon examination, transrectal ultrasound and measurement of PSA.

The 4 commonly used therapies are:

TURP: Transurethral resection of the prostate
Rezum: (water) steam vaporization of the prostate
Aquabeam: Robotic System: Acquablation therapy (high velocity heated saline jet)
GreenLight: Laser evaporation of prostatic tissues

I perform all above mentioned techniques and will advise patients which one is the most appropriate for their needs and circumstances.
